Yarning Stick (Wiradjuri: Giringyalanha Buwibirrang)
Yarning is an important part of Aboriginal culture and is practiced to build respectful relationships. Yarning circles provide a safe space to share, listen and pass on knowledge respectfully.
A Yarning Stick (also known as a talking stick) is a communication tool passed around to support, respect and empower each individual whilst speaking and sharing. The person holding the yarning stick is the only person to speak at the time, others must listen quietly and respectfully.
Our Yarning Sticks are handcrafted from Box Wood (types of Eucalyptus trees). The design that is hand painted on the Yarning Stick represents one person sharing knowledge or delivering a message to a group of people. The Yarning Stick is wrapped with twine and includes a Quangdong seed and Emu feathers this embodies the connection to Mother Earth where our culture lives and grows.
The Yarning Stick is designed to compliment our Growing Connections Discs and Yarning Cards, or can be purchased and used separately for team and group discussion.
Yaali Collective also facilitate Giringyalanha Buwibirrang workshops where each person designs and paints their own Yarning Stick.
